Gazing out across the North Sea, Sunderland is one of the biggest cities in the north-east, so there is no shortage of options for exciting days out.
A great place that will give you an understanding of the history and culture of the city is Sunderland Museum and Winter Garden. The museum tells the story from the city's prehistoric past, right through to today, with plenty of interactive and hands-on features. Its adjacent Winter Garden boasts more than 1,500 exotic flowers and trees from across the world, plus plenty more things to do.
More of Sunderland's history can be found on the Stadium of Light tour. Home to the city's beloved football club, who were last in the Premier League in 2016-17, you can walk through the tunnel and hear all about the club's past for a great way to spend a rainy afternoon.
Family days out can also be enjoyed at The Strategy, for those who want to give their brain a workout and at Silksworth Sports Complex and Ski Slope, for those wanting to give their body a workout.
Active kids will also love Skaters Club, where they can have a 'wheely good' time burning off energy in skating and scooter sessions, and at roller discos.
A different day out can be enjoyed at the National Glass Centre. Kids can pick up Adventure Backpacks to keep them engaged, while the whole family can have a go at various workshops, including glass painting, glass fusing and sandblasting.
For smaller visitors, Fuzzy Eds will provide hours of soft play fun and is perfect for escaping the rain.
