Salford is a prime location for some excellent family days out, particularly for those living or staying in Manchester.
Arguably its best-known attraction is The Lowry, with its colourful layout and galleries of artwork by LS Lowry and others. It also has an Art Detective Trail, as well as Family Corner for those under 5 to have a play.
Also at Salford Quays is MediaCityUK, which houses parts of the BBC and ITV. You can tour the studios where BBC shows such as Match of the Day, Blue Peter and CBBC programmes are made.
At the Helly Hansen Watersports Centre, you can hop on board dinghies, windsurfers, kayaks and canoes, as well as try out building a raft. There's also an eight-metre high climbing wall and urban orienteering.
Ordsall Hall dates back to the 12th century and youngsters can do chain mail and dress up as Tudors while discovering what life was like in the 1500s.
Salford is also part of the 'red half' of the football-mad city of Manchester, so why not take a tour of Old Trafford, Manchester United's famous stadium, emerging out of the tunnel where so many legends have walked.
