About Edinburgh Castle
Edinburgh Castle cannot be missed when you pay a visit to the Scottish capital - quite literally, as it dominates the skyline, as well as being one of the most popular attractions for days out in Britain.
Standing at the head of the equally popular Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle boasts so many things to do and see that you can easily spend a full day exploring and still miss bits out.
Kids will love being around for the famous and booming One o'Clock Gun, fired from Mills Mount Battery, a tradition dating back to 1861 to signal the time to ships in the Firth of Forth. Handily, the cannon is located right next to the Redcoat Café (one of the castle's two restaurants) - perfect for a lunchtime pitstop.
Youngsters will also be fully engrossed by ‘Fight for the Castle' - an immersive exhibition where you can learn about the Wars of Independence and the pivotal role Edinburgh Castle played.
Don't miss out on the chance to see the Great Hall, the Stone of Destiny (which only returned to Scotland in 1996 - 700 years after it was stolen by Edward 1 and housed in London), the National War Museum and the Prisons of War exhibition, where the vaults below Crown Square have been recreated to show where prisoners of war and even pirates were detained during the 1700s and 1800s.
If you're looking for educational family days out which will also keep youngsters engrossed, there are few better options than Edinburgh Castle.
There's no parking directly at the castle, but there is on-street parking nearby, as well as in the NCP Edinburgh Castle Terrace car park.
Baby changing facilities are available in all toilet locations.
Due to the castle's age, wheelchair access is limited in some parts, although many rooms and exhibitions are accessible via ramps.
Afternoon tea is available at Edinburgh Castle. Enjoy other fine food on The Tea Rooms menu or visit the Redcoat Café for a light snack or larger meal.
