The Sussex port of Newhaven, nestled on the River Ouse between Brighton and Eastbourne, is not only a link to the continent but also a great base for some family days out.
The Victorian-era Newhaven Fort, built to defend the harbour, is now a museum where you can learn about the people who lived and worked there, check out the war guns and experience a Blitz air raid in a bomb shelter simulation. Plus there's an outdoor adventure playground for the Under-12s.
At Paradise Park, youngsters can learn about the geological formation and evolution of Earth, the rise and fall of the dinosaurs and the progress of man through the centuries, including Neanderthal Zone. There's also a heritage trail and gardens and playzone.
Sky High Trampoline Park, up the road in nearby Peacehaven, opened in 2016 and includes an array of trampolines, parkour, slam-dunk basketball and Aeroball. It's also a great venue for a party.
A few miles out of Newhaven, just off the A27, is the ever-popular Drusillas Park, where youngsters can get up close to hundreds of animals, from meerkats and pandas to penguins and lemurs. It also has several play areas and two rides, plus the Safari Express train to get around the park.
