About The National Gallery

Located in the heart of central London, the National Gallery is home to historic art collections and also makes for an educational and fun day out for families.

It boasts more than 2,600 paintings, including Constable's The Hay Wain and Holbein's The Ambassadors, plus stunning works by the likes of Vermeer, Titian, Cezanne, Seurat, Monet, Rubens and Gainsborough.

The collection belongs to the country and entry is free. In 2019, it was the seventh most visited art museum in the world.

There are several audio tours perfect for young children to have fun and learn at the same time. In one, they get to teach the grown-ups a thing or two as they reveal some hidden secrets about art and the works, while the Art Detectives tour gives budding sleuths the chance to search for clues and meanings within some of the more mysterious paintings.

The National Gallery also runs special activities during the school holidays and any inspired youngsters should bring a sketchpad on their visit.

When you're hungry, pop into the National Dining Rooms, with its views across Trafalgar Square, or the National Cafe for brunches and afternoon tea.
